Sandy Hill is one of Ottawa’s oldest neighbourhoods, and the housing reflects it.
Large Victorian and Edwardian homes line streets like Laurier Avenue East and Range Road, many of them heritage buildings, some converted into embassies, offices or multi-unit apartments. High ceilings, ornate trim, original wood floors and tall windows all take more time and a gentler approach than a modern home.
Next to the University of Ottawa, much of the housing is rentals: converted houses, row houses and low-rise apartment buildings. That means a lot of move-in and move-out cleaning around the start and end of the academic year, where the goal is getting a unit deposit-ready.
There are also newer condo buildings toward Rideau Street, which are quicker to clean but need building access arranged in advance.
